TREE THEATRE GROUP
Tree Theatre Group (TTG) consist of parents and children who have been
active in environmental work since 1998 in Malaysia. Led by Jes Izman Izaidin
several projects and campaigns were organised in school and the
surrounding community which included recycling and animal conservation.
These efforts eventually expanded and are described as follows:
Art for the Environment
TTG believes that creative expression is a wonderful medium for the youth
and children to express their voices on issues such as the environment.
In 2006, TTG organised and presented an eco-play titled "Tears of Trees" for
the UNEP Tunza International Children's Environmental Conference in
Putrajaya, Malaysia. The accompanying song from the eco-play became a
campaign song for the United Nation's UNEP Billion Tree Campaign.
In 2007, TTG was given the honor to perform an eco-play at the Opening
Ceremony of the 24th UNEP Governing Council Ministerial Meeting in Nairobi,
Kenya that was attended by more than 170 Environmental Ministers.
And in 2008, TTG performed the eco-play "The Last Tree on Earth" at the
UNEP Tunza International Children's Conference in Stavenger, Norway.
In 2009, TTG performed the Shadow-Puppet Eco-Show 'Empty Earth' at the
2009 UNEP Tunza International Children & Youth Environment Conference in
Daejon, South Korea.
Advocacy for the Environment
TTG is currently advocating to the United Nations for the establishment of a
WORLD TREE DAY (WTD).
The idea for a WTD came from children who said that most of the 'Days' being
celebrated came from adults and that the TREE is an environmental icon they
can relate to.
Several initiatives such as a public petition, tree-planting campaign in
schools, a memorandum to the Malaysian Prime Minister, web-site and
pamphlets along with presentations at international conferences. Please go
to www.worldtreeday.org for details.
Awareness for the Environment
TTG is also working closely with the Malaysian Ministry of Education and
Nickelodeon Asia on the Big Green Help community based project to
encourage children to embark on environmentally friendly activities that will be
recognised and celebrated by Nickelodeon Asia for 2008-2009.
TTG's "Spreading the Tunza* Spirit" campaign aims to create awareness in
schools and communities to organise eco-friendly activities and also to
implement the 2008 Tunza Children's Environmental Commitment that can
qualify for selection to become country delegates to the United Nation's
UNEP Tunza International Youth and Children Environmental Conferences.
(*Tunza is Swahili for 'We Care' which UNEP uses in the title of all their environmental
conferences)
